Atmospheric and colourful contrasts in light and shade have been the prime inspiration for Stephen throughout his work as an artist. This theme is explored using bold watercolour and acrylics in differing light conditions and locations around the world. The subjects, which can vary from moody urban street scenes to bright coastal landscapes, are usually encountered by chance and stimulate emotions that Stephen endeavours to recreate in his paintings.

After starting a different career as a young man, Stephen was inspired to paint again while travelling around Australia in the 1990’s. Later, while living in Melbourne, he came into contact with Alvaro Castagnet, a world renowned watercolourist. He briefly studied under Castagnet and was very influenced by his unorthodox bold, bright and passionate use of watercolour. He then continued to develop his technique and sold his work through galleries in Australia before returning to the UK in 2000, where he now lives with his family.

Since his return, Stephen has continued to experiment with different subjects, exciting light conditions and the contrasting inspirations of European cities and the South West coast of Devon & Cornwall. His work is in private collections in the USA, Canada, UK and Australia.
