Mike is an award-wining, contemporary artist whose instantly recognisable work defines a whole genre of mixed-media painting. Mike was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1997.

Mike’s long association with Dartmouth began many years ago during his academic studies. “I first started drawing and painting in the Dart Valley while I was still an art student at the Royal Academy Schools 35 years ago” he recalls. Mike trained at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in Farnham, before completing his postgraduate studies at the RA.

Initially painting in oils, Mike’s work evolved as he pioneered a distinctive, vibrant, mixed- media technique. As a base to his paintings, Mike creates abstract structures with paper collage and then uses acrylic/ mixed media to progress the painting. The image develops through “happy accidents” as textures, colours and shapes fall into place, providing a strong sense of connection to place, without being over-representational.

Mike explains; “The new technique was completely liberating. My paintings became looser, more colourful, textural, and sometimes almost abstract.”

Mike lives in Devon and continues to paint the local landscape.
