Artist submissions

For artists interested in working with us, here are FAQs about our submissions process:

I'd like my work to be in the gallery. What should I know?

We love meeting new artists and seeing their work, but we are a busy, small gallery, and our wall space is full! We are so grateful for interest in the gallery but please do understand that we need a really good reason to take on someone new and we may not be able to give a positive answer, even if we love your work.

What kind of work do you accept?

Please look at our website and social media and see if you feel your work would fit in well.

We mostly work with local artists and we especially enjoy art featuring coastal, local and nature themes, so if this doesn’t describe you, there would need to be a compelling reason for us to work together.

You are welcome to walk into the gallery and take a look at the work we display any time we are open. Please say hello, and introduce yourself as an artist. However the gallery staff can only say a brief “hello” as they have other tasks during the gallery day. This is because we are here to look after our artists and customers as well as we can.

You will need to make a submission in order to have a longer chat about your work and we can’t review portfolios for people who walk in.

How do I make a submission?

Please email Joanna (the gallery owner) on mail@whitesailsgallery.com with:

At least 5 photos of recent pieces of work in an easy-to-open format (or a link to an online portfolio).

Please tell us medium, sizes and the retail price you’d like for the work.

A few paragraphs of bio (your background, arts education, exhibitions, prizes, or previous gallery experience) and a few sentences about your art-making process and your motivation to display work with us.

Let us know if you have social media we can look at, or a website.

Joanna will aim to reply within 2 weeks and let you know if she believes there is the potential to do some work together. She will organise a convenient time for a phone call in this case.

Tell me about your featured artist slot

Every few months, we showcase some examples of one or two artists who may not yet have had extensive gallery experience. This is not a large exhibition (as our wall space is limited) but often involves displaying 2 or 3 pieces of work. We provide feedback and support about selling your work. Please be aware this scheme is very full, and spaces are planned months (or years!) in advance. To apply, your work must work with other work in the gallery.

You can apply via the usual submissions route and Joanna will be in touch if your work and background would suit this scheme.
