Carvings

Designed in the UK by Will & Zoe Ziegler in collaboration with skilled craftsmen and artists in Indonesia, Will & Zoe travel to the far east several times each year to work with their carvers on new designs. The products go through many different processes to get to the finished item, from treating the raw wood to the final coat of polish. Every stage is done by hand and every piece is individual. The wood itself is a fast growing soft wood called Albesia and in Indonesia they call it magic wood because it grows so quickly. From planting to fully grown it only takes 3 years. The log bases for the bigger carvings are buried for up to 30 months, during which time the wood decays to produce wonderfully characterful stumps and branches, giving each carving a unique look such that no two pieces are the same. Will & Zoe see their work in Indonesia as a partnership, providing significant investment to the craftsmen and their facilities, and they are extremely proud of their Fair Trade standards.
